Philip David Charles (Phil) Collins (Chiswick, London, January 30, 1951) is a British pop musician. He became known as drummer and lead singer of the progressive rock group Genesis, he won several Grammys as a solo artist and an Academy Award [2] and also has a successful career as an actor. [1]

His singles, often go on lost love, ranged from the drums loaded with "In the air tonight", the dance-pop song "Sussudio" and the political views of his successful song "Another Day in Paradise". His international popularity transformed Genesis from a progressive rock band with a small group of fans to one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and also an old familiar in the charts.

Collins' professional career began as a drummer in the obscure rock group Flaming Youth. [3] When he later joined the Genesis was better known, he provided the only band of drums and background vocals for the lead singer Peter Gabriel. Only in 1975, when Gabriel left the band, Collins was lead singer of Genesis. By the end of the seventies demonstrated the hit "Follow You, Follow Me" drastic change from the early years of the band and the fact that the band without Gabriel could. [4] His solo career, which significantly affected by his personal life, brought him to one and Genesis commercial success. According to Atlantic Records was Collins' total worldwide sales as a solo artist in 2002 more than 100 million albums. [5] That makes Collins and Paul McCartney are the only artist with both a solo band as more than 100 million albums sold.

Collins worked with many artists together, including The Four Tops, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Eric Clapton, ABBA's Frida, Mike Oldfield, Sting, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne, Queen, Laura Pausini and The Who.

[Edit] Biography Collins got his first drum set on his fifth, though a speelgoedset. When Collins was ten, he gave his brother a modeltreinset a drum kit for a boy from the street. His first real drum set he got on his twelfth. Collins' first band was called "The Real Thing." He also played in 'The freehold "and" Flaming Youth "which he recorded his first album, Ark II.

[Edit] GenesisIn 1970 responded to the 19-year-old Collins an advertisement in the British music magazine Melody Maker calling for a drummer. The advertisement was placed by the then manager of the progressive rock band Genesis, with the then-unknown Peter Gabriel as lead singer. During the audition, several drummers played, but there was no one who so impressive as the young Collins.

Collins caused a sensation by his technical style of play. Or as Tony Banks (Genesis keyboard player) once said in an interview: "When Phil joined the band, he was the best musician in the band."

Besides drums Collins sang the lead vocals on some Genesis songs such as "For Absent Friends" from the album Nursery Cryme and "More Fool Me" from the album Selling England by the Pound, and he was the regular background singer until 1975.

In 1975, after the tour of the album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Genesis singer Gabriel decided to leave. After an intensive search for a new singer, without success, Collins decided themselves to take on lead vocals. On the albums he was also a drummer, but the live shows for a new drummer was found. In 1976/1977 this was Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson). And from 1977 (as Bruford wants to focus on other things) was the drum chair during the live show taken by Chester Thompson (Frank Zappa, Weather Report).

The first album with Collins as lead singer (A Trick of the Tail) was a great success. The album sold more than any previous Genesis albums. The band was the most commercially successful with Collins as a singer. In 1978 there was therefore the first world hit: Follow You Follow Me.

During the 70 years Collins played drums with the jazz fusion band Brand X, and he played on albums including Brian Eno, Robert Fripp and John Cale. Collins played in 80 years including Adam Ant, Eric Clapton, Howard Jones, Tears for Fears and Robert Plant.

[Edit] Genesis in the years 80 and 90In the year 1980 transformed Genesis from a progressive rock band to a more broader-based musical band. They were then no longer in a musical genre to accommodate. With Collins as lead singer of Genesis holds a long string of successful albums and singles, as the album Invisible Touch in 1986, that Genesis is the first No. 1 album in England. The group received the same year an MTV "Video of the Year" award for the video of the hit single "Land Of Confusion '.

After a massive world tour in 1992 and 1993 as a sequel to the album We Can not Dance, Genesis in 1993, Collins said goodbye. Collins wanted to focus more on his solo career and found that he could no longer combine his role in Genesis.

Yet Collins did in 1999 again with his old band Genesis members Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Steve Hackett to the number Carpet Crawlers re-record the hitcompilatie: Turn It On Again ... The Hits.

[Edit] Solo [edit] The beginning ... Face Value and Hello, I Must Be GoingIn 1981 Collins launched his solo career with the album Face Value, an album until five years after the release of the album kept popping up parades. The songs were later Face Value Collins was too personal to use for Genesis (many are about the divorce from his first wife in 1978) and they disappear first in the fridge. But after Atlantic Records boss Ahmet Ertegun, has heard the songs, like Collins, he offers a contract. The first single from the album In the air tonight is immediately a big hit around the world, and suddenly Collins next lead singer of Genesis is also a successful solo performer.

Collins will continue to both Genesis and his solo career in 1983 and brings his second solo album, Hello, I Must Be Going. The single from this album, a cover of the Supremes hit "You Can not Hurry Love 'is a worldwide success. The album itself sold well. In 1982 and 1983 is his first as a solo artist on a world tour. His first solo concert takes place at the Convention Centre.

In 1982, produces, plays drums and sings background on Something's Going On the first solo album by Anni-Frid Lyngstad, better known as the red-haired Frida from the Swedish pop group ABBA. In 1984, Collins asked to write a song for the film Against All Odds. Collins has an unused track from Face Value session and decides to use the film. With Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now), Collins a new world hit and an Oscar nomination address.

[Edit] No Jacket RequiredIn 1985 is Collins' most successful solo album to date from: No Jacket Required. With a long series of top-10 singles (including Sussudio, Do not Lose My Number, Take Me Home, and One More Night) and several Grammys Phil is one of the biggest stars of 80 years. His duet with Earth, Wind & Fire singer Philip Bailey Easy Lover, is a worldwide hit. In 1985 Collins again on a world tour and he plays for millions of fans in the No Jacket Required World Tour .... No Ticket Required! "

[Edit] Live Aidin Collins during the same year occurs not only at Live Aid at Wembley Stadium in England, but also in Philadelphia with Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton. He was flown by Concorde to Philadelphia that same day he was on stage again. A feat to this day is not matched.

In 1988, Collins took to acting again when he plays the main role in the film Buster, a film about Buster Edwards, one of the robbers during the great train robbery in London early 1960. His music for the film, A Groovy Kind Of Love and Two Hearts - Collins, who along with Motown songwriter Lamont Dozier wrote - are global hits. Collins also played in the ultimate 80-year series Miami Vice.

[Edit] But seriouslyIn 1989, But Seriously, an album full of songs about problems in the world. From famine to war and racism, but also some very personal songs on the band with his father, his son and his failed marriage. This album broke all sales records again. It is also the best-selling British album of all time. The single Another Day in Paradise is soon adopted by many homeless organizations around the world and asks Collins to help them by during each concert to collect money for a local homeless organization. The money collected will be doubled it.

Collins made himself unpopular at that time in the merchandising business, using for each concert to the public, especially not tell Phil Collins T-shirts or other merchandise now because he already "enough fucking money" has. The money could be better in the collection boxes for the homeless will be stopped.

But seriously ... The album won a Grammy Award for Record Of The Year and in 1990, Collins' third solo tour, the Serious Tour resulting in the CD Serious Hits Live! and video / DVD Serious Hits Live in Berlin!

[Edit] Both sidesIn 1993 (Collins and Genesis has been abandoned, and again after a break as an actor starring in the movie Fraud) was Collins' fifth solo album, Both Sides. This time no upbeatnummers with lots of wind, but very quiet personal and often heart-rending songs. Inspired by his current marriage piece, this album is entirely self recorded by Collins. He only wrote all the songs, played all instruments and produced it myself. It is his most personal album to date.

Although the album worldwide number one position on the chart obtained, sold not as good as its predecessors. Collins started from then to feel that he does not really belong in the music business, as he himself said in several interviews. Yet he went with the music of this album (and its predecessors) on tour, the largest so far.

In 1994 and 1995, the Both Sides world tour of every continent. From Europe to Asia, Africa and South America. Collins played in two years time for millions of people around the world.

[Edit] Happy again ... Dance Into The Lightin 1996 Dance Into The Light came out. Collins has rediscovered the happiness in love and it shows. Including a cover of Bob Dylan's The Time's They Are A Changin, and the cheerful Wear My Hat '(in the video a guest appearance by Danny DeVito), grab this album something back to Collins about the time of But Seriously. And although the album reminds them, do not emulate its success.

In 1997, Collins toured with "The Dance Into The Light .... A Trip Into The Light World Tour" around the world. Collins first played as a normal stage, but on a circular stage placed in the middle of the room. This means that the entire band during the concert had to stay in motion for everyone to be equally visible.

[Edit] The Phil Collins Big Band Collins has taken his love for jazz and big band music never concealed. In 1996, Collins played two shows with a big band at the Royal Albert Hall in London for Nelson Mandela and the Queen. This flourished Collins' love of jazz again, and he decided the 24-piece Phil Collins Big Band on tour through many major jazz festivals, including those in Montreux in Switzerland and the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. Many people were surprised when it appeared that Collins would not sing during the performances. He did play Genesis and solo songs, but now only instrumental in big band style and his favorite instrument, the drums.

In 1998, Collins again with the Big Band on tour, and he also took the live album The Phil Collins Big Band A Hot Night In Paris on.

Following this success, Collins threw himself into a different world.

[Edit] DisneyAls Collins asked by Disney to write music for their latest film Tarzan, first he doubts whether he can write music like Alan Menken and Elton John ever did for Disney Films. If Disney convince him that they do not want him to write such Menken and John, but as Collins himself takes up the challenge. The film Tarzan is a great worldwide success. To top it off Collins in 1999 also wins an Oscar for the song You'll Be In My Heart, the title song from the movie, written for his daughter Lily.

[Edit] Time to TestifyIn 2002, Collins' seventh solo album, Testify. The first single from the album (Can not Stop Loving You) is a world (with a number one position among others in the United States) and with high prices in the rest of the world seems Collins back with a vengeance, but as he says: "I've never been away, only slightly less in the picture". The album nevertheless not expected to sell in England and America, but knows the hearts of Europeans and Asians to win by five top positions in countries including the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Japan and China.

During the recording sessions for Collins Testify in 2000, suffered a stroke in his ear, a portion of his audience on the left disappears. His doctor advises him ever go on tour. As time passes, however, Collins gets used to his smaller audience and he can take good care. A tour, however, is no longer, he fears. Then he asked again by Disney to write music for a movie, this time for Brother Bear. This time no Oscar, but a successful single: Look Through My Eyes.

In 2002 Collins plays drums in the house band at the Queen's Jubilee concert, a rock concert to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth. As house drummer Collins with just about every artist, including Ozzy Osbourne, Paul McCartney, Queen and Cliff Richard. The whole world gets to see how versatile this little big man from London. He performed them with 'You Can not Hurry Love'.

Collins wrote nine new songs for the musical, as well as several instrumental tracks and guides the creative team and cast from day one until the premiere on May 10, 2006 in New York. Although the highly successful musical in the Netherlands is declining visitor numbers in New York. Therefore decides to Disney musical Tarzan from July 8, 2007 to stop. After just over one year it's curtains for the U.S. version of the musical.

[Edit] Separate LivesIn 2006 comes suddenly (as Collins says that), ended his marriage to Orianne. Official reports say that "different interests" the two are growing apart. Collins is completely out of the field beaten by the sudden decision of his (now) ex-wife, and has trouble processing the divorce. In interviews he says he now mainly lives for his two sons, and he wants to see as much as possible. He remains in Switzerland close to his two boys' live. Collins was particularly pleased by this event that he gets some time with "old friends" can go pull.

[Edit] Genesis Turn It On Tour 2007 ... AgainOp October 19, 2006 it was announced that Genesis is back on tour. On November 7, 2006 are Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks a press conference to "Turn It On Again ... The Tour" to announce.

After a conversation with Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel backstage after Collins' concert in Glasgow in November 2005 soon became clear that Peter Gabriel, mainly due album recordings, it could not afford to go on tour. Following this refusal decided Collins, Rutherford and Banks (when Gabriel and Hackett had left) as a trio on tour.

From June to October 2007 drew Collins, Rutherford and Banks (with Chester Thompson and Daryl Stuermer) along several European, American and Canadian cities with a light and stage show, including a 30 meters high podium with a screen up in September LEDs contain one million, more than ever for a rock concert.

[Edit] PensioenOp whether there will be a new solo album, Collins replied that he wrote much material (especially after the separation of Orianne) but that he currently has no need for the release of the material. He writes primarily for himself and has no sense in all work involved in creating and promoting a new album.

In an interview at the Folk Awards in February 2008 Phil was referring again to his retirement. He says all he wants right now is enjoying his retirement, but some people think he is always trying to pull out. He wants his time now primarily used to be together with his two sons and his hobbies are golf and sailing to practice. Opinions or music gigs is (currently) past time for him.

Collins has serious problems with one of his cervical vertebrae, causing his fingers partially paralyzed and he was very difficult to play drums.

[Edit] Going Back: The MotowncoveralbumIn September 2010 published Collins' Motown album. The album features covers of several Motown artists, and remains, said Collins, as faithful as possible to the original versions of songs. If taste was the song Too Many Fish in the Sea, originally recorded by The Marvelettes in 1964, free download on his website.

The recordings of the drums were extremely difficult. Collins had sometimes tie drumsticks to his arms, and often could only 10 seconds at a stretch be included [6].

[Edit] End of his carrièreIn March 2011, there were rumors a while, he finally will end his career would put it on his website, however, signaled that this is not true [7].
